DStan

Discovery, customer journey and website prototype

Impressed with the solution I provided to a previous project around the management of legislation in regards to procurement, the MoD commissioned a similar study to explore management of defence standards and standardization. The brief was fairly open without too many goal requirements as the client did not wish to set any boundaries when defining the end solution. This allowed for a great deal of discovery around the use of standards and how potentially they could and should be used. The only caveat given was that the solution would need to be available online and that it would improve on the current process, saving money.

Presenting low fidelity wireframe prototype

Over four weeks, six workshops of rapid prototyping with a variety of Dstan users, managers and admins were undertaken, defining user journeys, personas and establishing a set of requirements on which to base and present a prototype solution to the DStan team in Glasgow.

In answering the brief the proposed website would not only allow its users to search and manage defence standards; but also, create, update and even share them within templates across the DStan community if required. The proposed website would also recommend the appropriate standards based on the specific user input and ensure users mitigate if selecting any alternative. Allowing standards to be created and updated within the website infrastructure meant wherever those standards were used they would be updated - notifying both users and owners of any changes. This completely removed the existing task of having to manually search for newer standards or ensuring existing applied standards we're relevant and up to date - a task which usually took a number of weeks. Savings were huge.

Behind the scenes

Outside of the sketching workshops, prototypes with built using Axure; illustrating how specific users (sponsors, managers and admins) would use the site and what functionality would be available to each.
